Remembering Mata Sahib Kaur Ji’s Birthplace

Mata Sahib Kaur Ji was born in Rohtas Village, located near Jhelum beside Quila Rohtas, within the family of Bhai Ramu Bassi. The Gurudwara was re-opened to mark the tercentenary of the martyrdom of the Sahibzadaas after being locked for more than 150 years.

She was married to Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji on 18th Visakhi, Samvat 1757, and is remembered as the mother of the Khalsa. Kalghidhar Guru Gobind Singh Ji was the founder of the Panth Khalsa, which is why at the time of the last rites, the sayings of Mata Sahib Kaur and Guru Gobind Ji are recited.

The birthplace of Mata is situated in a locality inside the main gate. The domed Janam Asthan is visible behind the houses from a distance of about 100 steps from the entrance to the locality. It is always locked. It was repaired during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The old building was demolished, and this new domed structure was built, but it too is now withering away.
